“Whiskey in the Jar” is one of the most well-known traditional Irish folk songs, with its origins dating back to the 17th century. It tells the story of a highwayman (robber) who was deceived by his woman. The hero robs the British officer Captain Farrell, and gives the money to Jenny to keep them safe. But Jenny betrays him; she puts water into his gunpowder so that he won’t be able to defend himself when Farrell arrives with his troops to arrest him. While in jail, the hero doesn’t loose his courage; he hopes that he’ll manage to escape, determined to return to the highwayman lifestyle.
“Whiskey in a Jar,” just like “Danny Boy,” is a favourite on St. Patrick’s Day. The Dubliners, The Irish Rovers, Tommy Makem and Christy Moore have made some of the most representative recordings of it. More than that, the rock bands Thin Lizzy, Grateful Dead and Metallica have created their own rock versions of the song that have also been very successful. It’s therefore no wonder why the song has a universal appeal to all kinds of audiences.

Whiskey in the Jar Lyrics
1. As I was a goin’ over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced me pistol and I then produced me rapier
Saying “Stand and deliver” for he were a bold deceiver
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
2. I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
3. I went unto my chamber, all for to take a slumber
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder
But Jenny drew me charges and she filled them up with water
Then sent for captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
4. ‘Twas early in the morning, before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrell
I first produced me pistol for she’d stolen away my rapier
I couldn’t shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
5. There’s some take delight in the carriages a rollin’
And others take delight in the hurly and the bowling
But I take delight in the juice of the barley
And courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
6. If anyone can aid me ’tis my brother in the army
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney
And if he’ll go with me, we’ll go roamin’ through Kilkenney
And I’m sure he’ll treat me better than my own me sportin’ Jenny
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar
