“What Will We Do With a Drunken Sailor” or simply “Drunken Sailor” is one of the most famous sea shanties dating back to the 19th century. The author is unknown and the song shares the same tune with the Irish folk song “Oró, Sé Do Bheatha ‘Bhaile”. It is listed as no. 322 in the Roud Folk Song Index.
There are many different versions of the lyrics – in some cases each successive verse suggests a method of sobering or punishing the drunken sailor. In other cases, further questions are asked and answered about different people. In the 20th century, “Drunken Sailor” is the most popular of sea shanties and has been recorded by many artists.
