“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is based on the French melody “Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman” and the lyrics are adapted from Jane’s Taylor poem “The Star”.

While the original French version of the rhyme does not directly correspond to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”, the melodic structure and rhythm are shared among them. In many cultures, the familiar tune of “Ah! Vous dirai-je, maman” has been adapted to fit various lyrics, including the English version commonly sung to teach children the alphabet or to accompany the nursery rhyme “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”

Besides being known as a baby sleep song, its melody is also popular with different lyrics as “Baa, Baa Black Sheep” and as “Alphabet song”. Moreover, Mozart used this theme to compose a piano piece that consists of twelve variations.
