If you’ve been looking for Loch Lomond lyrics, then you’re on the right page!
“Loch Lomond” or “The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond” is an old folk song from Scotland; it was created during the Jacobite rebellions era in Scotland in the 18th century. Loch Lomond is the largest Scottish loch, and “bonnie” means “attractive”, “beloved”, or “dear” in Scottish.
The lyrics narrate the story of two Scottish soldiers who were incarcerated after the battle with the English. The character singing is the one who’s going to be executed by the enemy; he’ll take the ‘low road’ back home, meaning the route for the souls of the dead. The other one will be set free to return home from the “high road” over the mountains.
Loch Lomond is very popular in Scottish culture, with numerous recordings and arrangements in classical, pop and jazz music. Additionally, the Scottish folk-rock band Runrig have made the song their unofficial anthem, while a shorter version of the song is a favourite of sports’ fans in Scotland. There’s also an Irish variant of the song called “Red Is the Rose” in the same tune but different lyrics.

Loch Lomond Lyrics
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon’
Where me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’
O ye’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road,
An’ I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
For me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’
‘Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o’ Ben Lomon’
Where in the purple hue the Hieland hills we view,
An’ the moon comin’ out in the gloamin’
O ye’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road,
An’ I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
For me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’
The wee birdies sing and the wild flow’rs spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleepin’
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Tho’ the waefu’ may cease frae their greetin’
O ye’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road,
An’ I’ll be in Scotland afore ye
For me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomon’
