If you’ve been looking for Hokey Pokey lyrics, especially if you’d like to print them out, then you’re on the right page!
“The Hokey Pokey“, also known as “Hokey Cokey” in the UK and the Caribbean, is a very popular campfire song and participation dance. There is evidence from oral testimonies and written sources that variations of the song exist since the 19th century. The title is thought by many to supposedly come from the magician’s incantation “Hocus Pocus“.
In the 20th century, there was a dispute on the copyrights of the song. In the UK, Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy published a “Cokey-Cokey” song in 1942. In the USA, the song “Do The Hokey Pokey” was copyrighted by Larry LaPrise who claimed to have created the tune as entertainment for the Sun Valley, Idaho, ski crowd in the 40’s. Yet it was Ray Anthony’s recording from 1953 that made it a big success in the USA under the title “The Hokey Pokey”.
What’s more important is that this is a very amusing song and dance for groups of all ages. It’s very popular in kindergartens to promote movement coordination to toddlers and to even teach them the parts of the body (just like Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes). It’s also a hit in language classes of English for foreigners around the world.
On this page you’ll find the lyrics of the song and a printable PDF file with lyrics for free download. You can also watch three music videos. The first is an amusing animated video, while the second one is a fine instrumental version. In the third one, you can listen to the famous Ray Anthony’s recording.
