If you’ve been looking for The Fields of Athenry lyrics, especially if you’d like to print them out, then you’re on the right page!
“The Fields of Athenry” is a popular Irish folk ballad written by Pete St. John in 1979. Anthenry is onomatopoeia imitating the phrase ‘Áth na Ríogh’ (meaning ‘Ford of the Kings’), which is the name of a small town near Galway. The song tells the story of a young man who stole food for his family during the Great Famine of the 1840s. As a consequence, he was sentenced to prison at Botany Bay – a penal colony in Australia.
Nostalgic as it is, the Fields of Athenry brought up the harsh memories of the Irish emigration era, to touch the hearts of lots of people – Irish or not. The song was immediately adopted by Irish sports fans as well. Danny Doyle was the first to record it in 1979 with great success, to be followed by numerous covers and arrangements till now. Paddy Reilly, The Dubliners, The High Kings, The Irish Tenors are just a few of the artists that have included the song in their repertoire.

The Fields of Athenry Lyrics
- By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling:
“Michael, they have taken you away
For you stole Trevelyan’s corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay”
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It’s so lonely ’round the fields of Athenry.
- By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling:
“Nothing matters, Mary, when you’re free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity”
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It’s so lonely ’round the fields of Athenry.
- By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It’s so lonely ’round the fields of Athenry.
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It’s so lonely ’round the fields of Athenry.
